Luciano Achille Mauzan (1881 – 1952) was a prominent and prolific Italian poster artist whose advertisements magnetized customers with bright colors, charm and engaging humor during the Golden Era of Posters. A commercial artist, graphic designer, illustrator, engraver, painter and sculptor, Mauzan thrived during the Art Deco movement, creating over 2,000 posters promoting everything from bon-bons to champagne to Italian patriotism. Between 1920 and 1940, he was strongly influenced by the work of avant-garde Cubists. Mauzan also created over 1,000 postcards known for their strong, appealing graphics.
Ralph Steadman (1936- ). Flying Dog Brewery’s Gonzo roots run deep, really, to the core. For George Stranahan, Flying Dog’s owner, he needed no further than next door for wild-eyed inspiration– that being the entrance into the inner-sanctum of all things Gonzo, a parallel universe of a sort: it was the home of none other than Hunter S. Thompson. Somewhere beyond all the crazy nights and wild days, the brewery was born. Hunter had introduced George to his good friend Ralph Steadman, who’d famously illustrated Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and soon Flying Dog had it’s signature style, utilizing one of the greatest illustrators of the 20th Century. Asked to summarize what Gonzo style was, Ralph has said “Gonzo is the essence of irony. You dare not take it seriously. You have to laugh.” Something to keep in mind the next time you crack one of Flying Dog’s signature beers.
